In regions where industrial timber is skidded to the roadside in full length, it is very efficient if the timber truck is equipped with a grapple saw. In Switzerland and the French Alps, also many skidders are fitted with grapple saws. The felling is done with the chainsaw and on the steep slopes they try to bring up the whole stem in one piece and the skidder cuts it into pieces at the landing. A similar system is used in thinning operations of big hardwood stands. The trees are felled by the forest workers with the chainsaw. Afterwards the trees are skidded and bucked by the skidder.

Sawmills use grapple saws on excavators for cutting the long timber into assortments and transporting the trunks to the sawline.

HULTDINS grapple saws consist of a compact  housing, the motor with saw chain drive, the bar feed and return, the valve set, the chain oil pump, and, in most cases, the chain oil tank. Also available are standard or HD mounts securing the saw between the timber grapple and rotator.

The mounts are designed to allow the timber grapple to hang vertically when empty. This makes it easier to take up timber. These mounts can be attached to a wide range of grapples, also from other manufacturers. The hydraulic system is supplied through pressure and return lines. In most cases, these lines are routed through an INDEXATOR saw rotator GV124 or GV124-S.

The timber grapple can then continue rotating freely through 360°. The saw units are also suitable for installation in felling heads.
